Ljubljana in a day or two
Much of Ljubljana's architecture was shaped by the architect Jože Plečnik, whose bridges, riverbanks and market colonnades give the centre its character. Several of his works in the city are on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
- Prešeren Square and the Triple Bridge: the meeting point of the old town, by the pink Franciscan church.
- The riverbanks: cafés line the Ljubljanica on both sides. Walk from the Triple Bridge past the Dragon Bridge and the central market.
- Ljubljana Castle: walk up through the woods or take the funicular from near the market for views towards the Alps on clear days.
- Metelkova: an alternative cultural quarter in former barracks, covered in street art.
- Tivoli Park: a large green park on the edge of the centre, reached on foot.
Getting to Lake Bled
| Option | How it works | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Bus | Direct buses from Ljubljana bus station, roughly an hour and a quarter | Usually the simplest; stops in Bled town near the lake |
| Train to Lesce-Bled | Main-line trains towards Jesenice, then a short bus or taxi | The station is a few kilometres from the lake |
| Train to Bled Jezero | A small station on the scenic Bohinj line, above the far side of the lake | Fewer trains; check the timetable |
At the lake
- Walk the path around the lake; it takes about two hours at an easy pace.
- Take a traditional pletna boat to the island church, or rent a rowing boat in season.
- Climb to Bled Castle on its cliff above the water, or to the Ojstrica or Osojnica viewpoints for the classic view of the island. The paths are steep and can be slippery.
- Try the local cream cake, sold in many cafés around the lake.
Beyond Bled
- Lake Bohinj: larger, quieter and wilder, inside Triglav National Park. Reach it by bus or on the Bohinj railway line.
- Vintgar Gorge: boardwalks above a turquoise river near Bled. The gorge is usually open only in the warmer months and may require advance tickets.
- Škocjan Caves or Postojna Cave: large cave systems south-west of Ljubljana, easy to add as a separate day trip.
Practical tips
- Slovenia uses the euro and is in the Schengen area. Read the EU entry basics if you are from outside the EU.
- Bled is very busy in July and August, especially at midday. Arrive early or visit in late spring or September.
- Mountain weather changes quickly. Carry a warm layer and rain jacket even on a sunny day.
- Seasonal sights such as gorges, boats and mountain roads have changing hours and closures. Check before you set off.
